About the Project

The Not Your Soldier Project focuses on five core issues that form the backbone of the Poverty Draft.  These issues are clear, systematic ways that the military gains access to low income youth on a regular basis.

Not Your Soldier provides support to local groups who are campaigning to stop the Poverty Draft- from local networking sessions, to developing a campaign strategy, to days of action, and hosting skill-building camps for youth.

Each local campaign is tailored to fit, since the reality of recruitment is different from community to community.  But all Not Your Soldier partners share a perspective that the youth most heavily targeted by military recruiters should guide the direction, activities, and tone of the campaign.

The Not Your Soldier Project is staffed in partnership between War Resister’s League and The Ruckus Society.  We are guided by an advisory board made up of youth, adults, and veterans from across the US and Puerto Rico who are organizing to stop military recruitment in our schools and communities.  Not Your Soldier works with both national and local partner organizations.

Here’s the rundown:

ASVAB (Armed Service Vocational Aptitude Battery)
The Pentagon offers this military job-placement test free of charge to over 14,000 schools throughout the US, and uses the results to recruit for the military.

Alternatives to Military
Creating positive alternatives for youth is at the heart of this work.

No Child Left Behind
This is Bush’s educational reform act. It has a lot of problems, one of which is that it forces schools to give recruiters a direct line to all students.

School Visits by Recruiters
Depending on the school district, recruiters can come to schools anywhere from once a year to every day.

Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC)
We call it “rotsy” or “RO”. It’s a military curriculum offered in almost 20% of American high schools
